Was your baby one of the ones who didn’t put on weight exactly on the line in the ‘Red Book’ ? We’ve been waiting for the official release of new charts which give a more realistic guide to average weight gain, and finally they were launched this week. The old charts were based on formula fed babies who tend to gain weight more quickly than breastfed babies. This has led to a lot of breastfeeding mums worrying their babies weren’t putting on weight quickly enough and being encouraged to ‘top up’ or switch to bottlefeeding altogether. The new charts reflect the often slower gain of breastfed babies and will be reassuring to mums.

The new charts should be introduced into the red books from now, but you can view/download the charts to use now at http://www.rcpch.ac.uk/Research/UK-WHO-Growth-Charts
