I’ve taken part in many BabyShow’s around the country but for the first time babyconfidence had a small but perfectly formed stand in Earlscourt in October! It was lovely to meet so many mummies, babies & bumps & to have heard from some of you since. I hope that you enjoyed my October newsletter!
Also, a belated CONGRATULATIONS to Amy from Colchester who has won £100 worth of baby products! Well done!
We had another lovely afternoon last week at Cannizaro Park in Wimbledon for the NCT Teddy Bear’s Picnic. It threatened to rain all afternoon but didn’t thank goodness.
The babyconfidence and First Aid For Life balloons we were giving away to all the toddlers were a great success and loads of fun to do.
Congratulations to Emma from Raynes Park who is the winner of my prize draw from the afternoon!
The afternoon’s entertainment made it a real event, there were sessions all afternoon from people like Debutots (Rachel Bark-Jones) and Gymboree Wandsworth.
Last Saturday was the Cheeky Monkey’s Tea Party on Clapham Common and was the first time i’d been to such an event as an ‘exhibitor’! It was great fun and I’m looking forward to doing it all again at Cannizaro Park in Wimbledon next Friday the 3rd July.
It was lovely to see many of my current and former ‘mums’ with their babies, and a good opportunity to meet face to face with other mums & mums to be to tell them about babyconfidence!
The prize draw was won by Ana from Clapham-Ana I emailed you last week to tell you that you’d won £50 of babyconfidence services or products but you haven’t replied! If you’d like to claim your prize get in touch asap or I will draw out another name at next week’s fair.
Many of you will know that I’ve been doing phone consutations for years! The “new” bit is that I’m starting to arrange these through a new and innovative internet service called Greatvine. The benefit to clients is that the call can be recorded as part of the service so you can refer back to our conversation as you put the advice into practice. The cost is the same to clients too. The benefit to me is it cuts down on my admin!
I hope you’ll give this service a try, and check out some of the other professionals on there too, covering a range of topics. I’m sure Greatvine will be a big hit when word gets around!

I really put off the thought of having an aupair come to stay with us as I thought it would take forever to find someone, the paperwork would be really tedious and I’d find the whole thing really stressful! Not so! This week I’m going to start a blog page dedicated to my AuPair search, and how it goes this summer. You’ll be able to find it listed under ‘pages’ on the left.
Was your baby one of the ones who didn’t put on weight exactly on the line in the ‘Red Book’ ? We’ve been waiting for the official release of new charts which give a more realistic guide to average weight gain, and finally they were launched this week. The old charts were based on formula fed babies who tend to gain weight more quickly than breastfed babies. This has led to a lot of breastfeeding mums worrying their babies weren’t putting on weight quickly enough and being encouraged to ‘top up’ or switch to bottlefeeding altogether. The new charts reflect the often slower gain of breastfed babies and will be reassuring to mums.
I was invited to a screening of this documentary last week and highly recommend it. It explores the current situation in the United States regarding how birth has become much more medicalised and how that impacts on the outcomes for mother and baby. It spells out how intervention interferes with the normal physiology (and psychology) of labour & birth, causing problems which then need further intervention from the doctors to ‘rescue’ the situation.
I must echo a sentiment from the film -for me this is not about bashing the doctors-thank goodness we have them. It is though about women taking control of their labour & birth experience & doing everything possible to keep it natural and minimise intervention. A big part of that is confidence – if we see birth as a natural, normal process our bodies go through (rather than an illness, or obstacle) then with the right kind of preparation and support the physical and psychological outcomes are better. This is vital in early mother/baby bonding and sucess of breastfeeding too.
I’d recommend seeing this in early pregnancy or while planning a pregnancy ideally -giving you time to get your head around the issues discussed. I imagine the film may be a bit heavy going as the due date approaches-I’d be interested to hear what others think.
